Hanauma Bay Beach, Oahu
Hanuama Bay Beach Park, located in southeastern Oahu, offers visitors a chance to combine relaxation and education. The park was the first Marine Life Conservation District established in the state of Hawaii and is now aimed at preserving and protecting the 450 varieties of rare tropical fish that live in the bay. Upon entering the park, guests will have an opportunity to watch a short video about Hanuama Bay’s history and underwater life, after which they can walk or be escorted in a small bus (offered at a nominal charge) down to the stunning beach.
America’s Best Beach
On ten separate occasions since 1991, Hanuama Bay was named “America’s Best Beach” on a list compiled annually by Dr. Stephen P. Leatherman, professor at Florida International University in Miami and one of the world’s most imminent beach experts. The bay has long since been a favorite amongst marine enthusiasts and avid snorkelers. It is protected by a large reef that is home to a host of underwater species, many of which are unique to Hawaii.
Swimming in Hanuama Bay is safe and permissible, and lifeguards are on duty to assist novice swimmers. Snorkeling equipment is also available for rent from some of the nearby shops. In the bay, beachgoers can swim alongside and snap photos of rare marine animals, such as the Hawaiian state fish, the humuhumunukunukuapua’a. Swimmers should, however, refrain from touching or feeding the fish.
The park opens daily at 6 a.m., except on Tuesdays when it is closed for maintenance. Non-residents of Hawaii will be charged a $7.50 admission fee to enter Hanuama Bay (the fee is waived for Hawaii residents and for those active in the military). The park has a concession stand where guests can purchase food, as well as a gift shop and shower facilities. As the park is such a popular attraction, it can be difficult to find parking after 9:30 a.m.
