Sunset Beach, Oahu
At two miles in length and 200-300 feet in width, Sunset Beach is one of the longest and loveliest beaches on Oahu’s North Shore. As the name implies, this unspoiled white-sand beach offers some of the most beautiful sunset views on the island. The park itself includes 18 acres of land from the beach out to Kamehameha Highway and features amenities, such as picnic tables, restrooms and shower facilities.
During the summer months, the water is as calm as a lake here and the swimming and snorkeling conditions are good. In the winter, the beach is renown throughout the world as a genuine surfer’s paradise.
Surfing competitions
Various international surfing competitions are held at Sunset Beach every year, including the Triple Crown of Surfing. The beach has been featured in scores of early 1950s surfing films, allowing it to achieve an iconic status amongst surfing aficionados. Waves as high as 15-25 feet offer an exciting challenge to swimmers and surfers alike, but those new to the beach should be very careful of the “Sunset Rip,” an infamous riptide current that affects the surrounding waters.
Beachgoers are also advised to be aware of stinging limu (seaweed) during the summer months and to observe all warning signs and postings. Lifeguards are available at Sunset Park for assistance or to answer any questions, and free street parking is available.
