Waimanalo Beach Park, Oahu

Vacationers who tire of the crowds and hype of Waikiki Beach can find an alternate reality by taking a quick 20-minute drive along scenic Kalanianaole Highway to arrive at paradise. Otherwise known as Waimanalo Beach Park, this version of heaven includes a five-mile stretch of whit-sand beach, ubiquitous swaying palm trees and an endless, crystal clear sea.

So otherworldly and breathtaking is Waimanalo Beach, in fact, that the lauded writer James Michener used it as the setting for his novel, Hawaii. And not one, but two iconic television series - Magnum P.I. and Baywatch Hawaii - were filmed on its shores.

One of Oahu's best beaches

Today, Waimanalo Beach Park is a favorite amongst Oahu residents, who come to snorkel and sunbathe and to host beach-side barbecues that go well into the night. Waimanalo Beach usually has calm waters and is a good place for beginning bodyboarders and surfers. Lifeguards are regularly on duty.

On weekends, the park is sometimes bustling with activity, so those who want a truly quiet getaway might opt to head out to Waimanalo on weekdays. Equipped with ample showers, bathrooms and parking, Waimanalo Beach Park is the perfect answer to the urban overdose of Honolulu.
